Artificial intelligence (AI) is entering the medical sector more and more boldly, transforming the healthcare system and changing the way patients and doctors communicate and how the process of caring for patients' health looks. One of the most exciting tools of this revolution are medical chatbots – AI-based programmes that support both patients and professionals by automating many tasks and offering personalised assistance.
A medical chatbot is a system that uses natural language processing to interact with the user through text or voice. By analysing the entered data, such as symptoms or questions, chatbots are able to provide quite accurate and reliable health information (but still not perfect), schedule appointments or educate users on prevention and treatment. While they will not replace doctors, they are a valuable support – they work 24/7, can be accessed from anywhere and help manage health on a daily basis. Research proves that chatbots support healthy habits, improve compliance with medical recommendations, and educate patients in preparation for medical procedures.
One example of an innovative solution is the Polish chatbot Fido, created by researchers from the Polish University of SWPS, which supports mental health. Fido uses AI algorithms and cognitive behavioural therapy techniques to guide users through a dialogue to help recognise and change negative thoughts and boost positive habits. It is available 24/7, which is crucial for people struggling with depression or anxiety, who often face barriers to accessing traditional therapy. Research has shown that Fido helps to build ongoing wellbeing and overcome the anxiety of seeing a therapist. In addition, the chatbot supports the therapist in monitoring the patient's progress, making therapy more effective.
A recent study conducted in the United States revealed that AI chatbots can provide higher quality and more empathetic responses to patients compared to doctors. This sentiment was shared by up to 79% of the evaluators, underscoring the significant potential of chatbots in enhancing medical communication.
In summary, AI chatbots represent the future of medicine. These tools can support both patients and healthcare professionals by improving access to information and treatments, thereby enabling more effective healthcare. While AI chatbots are not intended to replace professional medical help, they are a valuable addition to the healthcare system and have the potential to revolutionize the way we manage our physical and mental health.
