On Friday, 17 November, the Minister for transport and communications of North Macedonia, Mr Blagoj Bochvarski, and the Minister for construction, transport and infrastructure of Serbia, Mr Goran Vesić, signed a Memorandum for the Construction of a Fast Railway from Niš to Skopje.

The project represents a significant collaborative effort between the two countries, for which funds will be requested from the European Union. The costs for the construction of the railway are expected to be around 1.5 billion euros.

The railway to be constructed on the side of North Macedonia will be 50 kilometres long, starting from the border crossing Tabanovce to the capital city of Skopje, with a railway leg to the Skopje International Airport. On the Serbian side, the railway will be long 135 kilometres, spanning from Niš to Preševo.

The project will ensure the connection of North Macedonia to the railway corridor Budapest – Belgrade – Niš – Skopje. It is expected that the rail voyage from Skopje to Niš will take 120 minutes, with the trains travelling at a speed of 160 km/h.
