In the coming weeks, the European Commission is expected to discuss amendments to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The proposed changes aim to simplify obligations, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises organisations with up to 500 employees. Specifically, the amendments could include measures such as easing the requirements for maintaining records of processing activities or preparing data protection impact assessments, both of which can be administratively burdensome for some businesses and do little to enhance their competitiveness against international rivals.

Initiated by the President of the European Commission, the GDPR reform responds to the international context and the need to strengthen the competitiveness of European companies compared to those in China and the USA. According to available information, the European Commission plans to publish a draft of the proposed changes to the GDPR by June this year.
