The Orban & Perlaki law firm has announced it partnered with UK-headquartered Gunnercooke, with the Budapest-based firm rebranding to OPL Gunnercooke.

According to the firm, "unlike most partnerships in the big law universe, OPL has not been acquired, nor will it be a branch or local franchise office of Gunnercooke." Instead, "OPL is responsible for building up and coordinating a network of Gunnercooke lawyers and offices in the entire CEE region."

As part of the partnership, a joint venture between the two – Gunnercooke Legal Tech – will provide the global Gunnercooke network and clientele with legal tech solutions from Budapest.

One of OPL’s founders, Miklos Orban, has been appointed to Gunnercooke's leadership team as Chief Technology Officer and will also serve as Managing Partner of Gunnercooke CEE.

OPL at a Glance

OPL is a legal consultancy in Budapest which works in partnership with the leading challenger law firm, gunnercooke. Our office is 35+ strong which lands us in the Top 10 of the Hungarian legal market in size, but our team members come from 8 different countries which makes us one of the most diverse and international legal teams in whole CEE region. But we are unique from other perspectives as well: OPL gunnercooke is an eco-system consisting of many legal ventures owned by OPL. We own one of the region’s leading policy and regulatory firms, but we also own a legal software developer company, a monitoring boutique, and a legal startup which matches freelance lawyers with clients via an online platform. With the combined offering of these companies, our clients may receive not only a comprehensive legal support, but also a unique perspective.

We are proud of our employment law practice. The team consists of practicing lawyers, HR professionals and academics, which make them capable of handling the most comprehesive and sophisticated labour queries. OPL’s employment team serves multinational clients, NGOs, trade unions and SMEs, but our team members are very socially consious, so the team often takes on employment matters of private individuals as pro bono cases.

Apart from the usual day-to-day contentious and non-contentious employment and data protection questions from clients, our tea also regularly carries out project-based services of differing scale. This can vary from conducting complex employment compliance programs to revising or drafting HR policies through matters concerning collective redundancy until transfer of undertakings. We also provide training to management, human resources professionals and staff on all aspects of employment law.

In the recent years, we built up a network of employment law specialists in the CEE region, with whom we cooperate on an everyday basis. Through this network, we advise clients on their employment and labour matters as a single point of contact across the whole region.

We have been a best friend of the international alliance, L&E Global since 2019. Our employment lawyers regularly contribute to hrportal.hu, a major website for Hungarian HR professionals and the European Employment Law Cases (EELC), an online database of judgements of national courts, the European Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights in the field of employment law.
