PGC Partners has successfully defended journalist Cornel Nistorescu and the Cotidianul newspaper against defamation claims filed by the Romanian Writers' Union.

According to the firm, the protracted legal battle spanned three years, from 2020 to 2023, and involved the trial phase, an appeal, and the final appeal. "The legal dispute represented a crucial endeavor to defend the exercise of the freedom of the press, a fundamental right provided by the European Convention on Human Rights," the firm announced.

The dispute was initiated following the newspaper's publishing of articles criticizing the Romanian Writers' Union organization and leadership. A final decision in the case was reached on November 8, 2023, and required the Romanian Writers' Union to pay all litigation costs for the defendant.

The PGC Partners team included Managing Partner Paul-George Cata and Co-Managing Partner Adina Maria Nitulescu together with sole practitioner Matei Chirilov.
